Superior Coin Grading

Finally, encapsulated coins are individually counted and checked against the original submission paperwork. Coins are then securely packaged in a sturdy cardboard box with protective packaging materials. The NGC-certified coins are now ready to be sent back to the submitter.

When a submission is received, it is opened by trained NGC staff under security cameras and immediately checked against the submission paperwork. The submission is then entered into NGC's proprietary tracking system with a unique submission number.

Each coin gets a more detailed review to confirm that its description matches the information provided by the submitter. A unique ID and barcode is assigned to track the coin throughout the NGC grading process. At this stage, the coin is separated from the submission paperwork so that NGC's graders don't know the submitter's identity, helping to ensure complete impartiality.

Each coin is stored in NGC's vault until it is ready to be reviewed for authenticity. If the coin is determined to be genuine, it will be graded according to the industry-standard NGC Grading Scale. If the coin is determined to be counterfeit or altered, it will not be graded.

Before grading, each coin that was submitted for Variety attribution is examined by a specialized numismatist. The coin is compared individually against published references to determine whether it qualifies as a particular variety. If so, the appropriate descriptions and numbers are then added to its record.

Grading is a team effort, with multiple NGC professionals examining every coin to ensure accuracy and consistency. To maintain impartiality, NGC's graders cannot be involved in the commercial buying and selling of coins. For each coin, a minimum of two NGC graders individually enter a grade into NGC's computer system. Then, a consensus is reached on the final grade of the coin.

After grading, the coin and a label bearing its date, mintmark (if any), denomination, variety (if any), grade, certification number and barcode are inserted into an NGC holder, which provides an attractive display and superior long-term protection. Numerous security features in both the holder and label guard against counterfeiting and tampering.

NGC images all graded coins after encapsulation. To check the legitimacy of an NGC-certified coin, these images are available to view 24/7 on the NGC website using the Verify NGC Certification tool. NGC also offers premium high-resolution imaging as an add-on service for submissions.

After imaging, an NGC Quality Control Specialist carefully inspects the coin, label and holder. All of the certification details are reviewed for accuracy, and the holder is checked for any defects or contaminants.
